Garmin inReach Sub 4

IRIDIUM® SATELLITE NETWORK

Instead of relying on tower-based cellphone coverage, your inReach® satellite communicator messages, SOS alerts, weather forecasts and tracking information are communicated via the world-circling Iridium satellite network1.

INREACH MESSAGING: YOUR NETWORK CONNECTION

Offering seamless global connectivity, the Iridium system of low Earth orbiting satellites — the world’s largest commercial constellation — operates as a fully meshed network positioned approximately 485 miles above the Earth. Most other networks use geostationary orbit systems positioned much higher (22,000 miles) from the planet. Thus, the Iridium constellation is positioned to provide stronger signals and faster connections through smaller antennas with lower power requirements. In practical terms, using the global coverage of the Iridium network enables your inReach device to keep you connected, even when you’re well beyond the range of cellphone towers or line-of-sight radio communications. inReach technology puts peace of mind in the palm of your hand.

STAY IN TOUCH WHERE CELLULAR TOWERS CAN’T REACH

How is inReach connectivity different from texting with your phone’s LTE cellular coverage? Both the Iridium and LTE cellular networks are capable of wireless data transmission — but there is one key difference. The LTE system your smartphone uses is a ground-based network that connects to your device through a series of cell towers. You must be within range of a tower to receive calls and data through your phone. If cellular networks go down — or if you go into off-grid regions where cell tower signals can’t reach — you’re cut off from cellular reception.

With inReach satellite connectivity, you’re not limited by your proximity to a cell tower. You can keep in touch with friends and family via two-way text messaging. Plus, if there’s an emergency situation, you can trigger an interactive SOS message to the Garmin Response℠ 24/7-staffed professional emergency response coordination center. You can be confident that inReach connectivity can provide a full-time emergency response connection where cellular networks can’t.
